kemal seyhan
Kemal Seyhan's exhibiton of his recent works consist of his large format paintings which address Clement Greenberg’s definition of Modernism. Using accumulated layers of vertical and horizontal lines, Seyhan presents grids that are entirely independent of outside referents. This lack of referent allows for a kind of introvertedness when one looks at his paintings. One can meditate on Seyhan’s lines, which simultaneously flatten the canvas and pinpoint specific locations on it.
Seyhan’s international background has enabled him to explore various aspects of Turkish and Western cultures. The fact that Seyhan spends time in Istanbul and Vienna makes him especially attuned to the peculiarities of each culture. In concentrating on colors and their emotive aspects, Seyhan points to the universality of the spectrum and the differences between individual cultures’ preferred palettes. Seyhan’s use of color is careful and premeditated; appearance, design and form factor into his horizontal and vertical applications of color.
