Gallery Information
ABOUT
artSümer, founded in 2005 by Aslı Sümer, focuses on representing the cutting-edge contemporary art of Turkey. The gallery works with artists at all stages of their career development, whose diverse practices include painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and new media.
In September 2009, concurrent with the 11th Istanbul Biennial, artSümer relocated, as a gallery and project space, to one of the most established buildings of the art scene for the last 50 years in Beyoğlu district. Set in the historic Rumeli Han, an orientation-deforming mystical place that reflects all of the typical characteristics of arcades as collective body, artSümer utilises the space without turning it into a white cube.
The relocation enables the gallery to develop a cutting-edge program that continues to grow and develop in order to introduce new artists to its audience. The gallery program consists of rotating solo exhibitions as well as participation in important international art fairs, including Contemporary Istanbul, Scope Miami and Scope Basel. artSümer is committed to showcasing substantive, young art in both local and international markets.
Since its founding, artSümer has also specialized in the resale of select works of contemporary Turkish art and in customized consultation on collection management.
Opening hours are Thursday to Saturday, 12-7 pm and by appointment.
After studying business administration at the University of Istanbul, Aslı Sümer worked in the corporate world for ten years. In 2003, she changed careers and moved to New York to study arts administration and arts appreciation at New York University. She founded artSümer in December 2004 after working with her family, which has owned one of the most recognized and well-established galleries in Istanbul since the ‘80s.
artSümer has been featured in numerous newspapers and journals including Cumhuriyet, Milliyet Sanat, Tempo, Radikal and Fortune magazine (October 2008). Artreview.com made special note of artSümer’s contribution to Scope Basel (2008).
