Ceren Oykut
Ceren Oykut
Ceren Oykut who lives and works in Istanbul uses the city as theme in her drawings. The city-chaos, constructed / destructed buildings, as well as the inhabitants of the city take part in her caricature-like stories where hope and hopelessness merge.
In this exhibition, first time in her career, Ceren Oykut moves slightly away from using the city as a mediary and opens her inner world to the audience. While on one hand she draws herself and pieces from her memory, she refrains from telling a story. “It’s my movie – Original, No Subtitles” she says.
Born in 1978 in Istanbul, Ceren Oykut graduated from the Painting Department of Mimar Sinan University in 2002. “Original, No Subtitles” is her first solo show at artSümer. Her previous solo show was in Slovenia in 2008 with “the lost passport” series. She took part in many national and international shows, the most recent being; a dream but not yours: National Museum of Women in the Arts Washington; reciprocal visit: Tobacco Warehouse Istanbul; tracing : Sabancı Kasa Gallery; 2009 Lyon Biennial; quel Istanbul?: Centre De Photographie de Lectoure; Istanbul Traversee : Palais des Beaux Arts de Lille.
