Wonderland with a Twist is a world of images, superimposing Alice’s stories on a backdrop of reality. Combining two-dimensional drawings and three-dimensional objects, Damla Faro breaks down the fables in the world she has created with her photographs; as “adult experience” is mixed in with mythological symbols, the tale begins to lose its power to enchant. Alice sets out on a journey through the back streets of reality.
While recreating the story, critical of the Victorian Era, with contemporary analogies, Damla Faro reasons that “In life, you open doors unaware of what lies beyond and take paths ignorant of where they lead. In actuality you pass over things which exist but go unnoticed.” The artist works on both a large and small scale to develop the images, which will assist in recognizing these transitions. Faro uses various devices to lead the viewer through these reorientations: a book to focus on a woman reading in one view, a step about to be taken to focus on the stone stairs leading to an iron door, or a pawn on a chessboard to focus on different perceptions of “womanhood.” Faro is searching for the doors which Alice has passed by in real life. In order to create this perception, she uses techniques, playing particularly with color, intended to illustrate the real world and substantiate the miniature. Drawing Alice in a garden full of plastic flowers, her knees black and blue, Faro contrasts two- and three-dimensional images in the same work. She uses the loss of focus to reach the visual capacity from another world, just as Alice’s growth and shrinking subsequently changed her point of view.
Faro’s work generally deals with themes ranging from fairy tales to mythology, from children’s stories to fantastical heroes. The artist, examining the dark faces of the fictional characters which she has photographed, points out the convergence of fables with reality in the contemporary world. In this way the artist chooses characters to further her position of confrontation with the real. Faro runs her mechanism of confrontation with reality backwards; she adds to a story already written. These characters, without losing their distinctiveness, are transformed as they search for the transit points to Faro’s world.
