Ceren Oykut
Ceren Oykut
Ceren Oykut uses art as an instrument for researching and questioning society, constructing parallel realities that represent models of our world. An active participant in the daily life of Istanbul, she sees the streets as a visual well from which to draw. Oykut reveals the stories of the city, tracing the chaotic lives of city dwellers and contemplating the absurdity of everyday life in Istanbul. Her works form a personal map of her collected visions.
The tremendous detail in Oykut’s drawings is a contemporary take on the Turkish traditions of miniature, caricature, satire, and humor in general. Comics, which easily establish communication with the public, are one of the most important sources of inspiration for her work. Her works, drawn in black pen on found paper or walls, have a diary-like quality, bringing a local point of view to today’s world. With her broad observations of daily life in Istanbul, Oykut generates a landscape of her own creation.
Born in 1978 in Istanbul, Ceren Oykut graduated from the Painting Department of Mimar Sinan University in 2002. The artist, whose drawings have appeared in magazines like L-inc, Kontrol, Roll, and Fuct-D, also works with the music band “Baba Zula” and the collective “Anabala”, where she creates and projects digital images on the stage in real time. She has contributed to projects in Turkey and abroad, in countries such as Belgium, Germany, Austria, Serbia, and Egypt. The artist lives and works in Istanbul.
